Evaporator and Condenser Coil Repair and Replacements

Two coil components within your home’s HVAC system work together to circulate cool air inside your home on hot summer days. Understanding what these components are and how they work can help you keep them properly maintained.

The evaporator coil sits inside your home close to the blower fans in your HVAC unit. These copper coils circulate coolant to absorb the heat from air circulating within your home. Heated coolant is piped through the system to the condenser coils. Condenser coils sit outside the house in the exterior unit; by exposing these coils to outside air, the hot air is pushed outside the home. On a smaller scale, this is why a portion of the window AC unit faces outside the house.

Dust buildup or frosting on coils is a clear sign your coils need servicing. Other symptoms include an AC unit that distributes warm air or an off-putting smell that may denote a coolant leak.

Evaporator and Condenser coils in a properly maintained HVAC system should last 10-15 years. Belle Air offers preventative maintenance and annual tuneup services to inspect your system. Between service calls, it’s important to change your furnace filters regularly to prevent the buildup of dirt, dander, and dust. When coil repairs or replacements are necessary, Belle Air can discuss all of your options with you, including replacing just the coil system or replacing the entire HVAC unit altogether. The latter option is usually the safest bet for aging systems, as newer models are much more energy-efficient and can come with service warranties.
